Logan paced in front of Victor’s stall. The horse watched him for a time, then decided munching hay was more interesting and turned its back.
What was he doing? How did Mrs. White’s words a few hours ago get him to ask – no, make that tell – Susara she was going to marry him? Was he out of his mind? And yet frightened, alone, and with no memory, she would be a sitting duck for some of the men in Clear Creek. He had to protect her.
Logan stopped walking. Of course, there was also that Mrs. White was right. He had been alone for far too long, even trying to be resigned to it. But she pegged him on it – he was indeed sweet on Fred.
He grinned at the endearment, all the more so because he knew it irritated her. Her eyes would flash, but at the same time her cheeks flushed with pleasure – he could see it clearly. Besides, it was something special they’d shared on the trail, and could continue to do so. Once they were married, they could share even more.
Of course, he felt that if he were any sort of gentleman he’d wait until they got to Clear Creek to consummate the marriage. But Mrs. White had nailed that point as well. What man could possibly be out on the trail alone with a beautiful woman for eight or ten days and not be tempted by her? It was one thing when he was protecting her and trying to keep her alive, quite another when both of them were riding the trail, healthy and strong – or bedding down for the night. He wasn’t made of stone, after all.
Logan let go the breath he’d been holding. The journey home …. no matter how he looked at the girl’s plight, he’d have to marry her in order to keep her safe. What galled him was that he wasn’t sure he’d be strong enough to protect her from himself otherwise.
And what of love? Didn’t women want to marry for love? For that matter, didn’t most men? He’d given his heart away once and had it returned to him in shreds. He did like his little Fred, she made him laugh. But love?
No, he had to look at the situation logically. She needed protection and identity. If she didn’t get her memories back, he could at least help her make new ones. And Mrs. White was right: he had been alone too long. It was time he moved on, and marrying Susara would do the trick. He didn’t have to give his heart away to do it …
“Howdy.”
Logan spun around, muscles tensed, hand on the butt of his gun. He let go a sigh of relief at the sight of the man just entering the barn, a horse in tow. “You shouldn’t come up behind someone so quietly. It could get you shot.”
“Bad habit of mine,” the man said, glancing around. “Silence kind of comes with my job, I’m afraid.
